Detailed Guide to Rug Color, Texture & Size

Rugs add warmth and have a positive visual effect on the design of a room. With so many styles out there however, choosing the right one can be an overwhelming experience. It’s a big decision for any homeowner who wants to create a balanced space. So, how do you know which one is the best? There are three main things to consider when shopping for rugs online: color, size, and texture.

Size

If you’re not sure of the best size rug for your space, you should take measurements of your room. Next, consider the furniture groupings and their layout. It’s sometimes better if you opt for a larger area rug if your furniture pieces are very spread out from each other, as it can help to visually bring them together. Before you select the final look, take cues from your room. In an opposite scenario where you want to make a smaller room appear more spacious, choose a rug size that extends beyond the furniture, when the latter sits on top of it. If you want to place the rug under the dining table for example, you should ensure it goes beyond the edge of the table surface. This allows the legs of chairs to rest comfortably on the rug without worry of them constantly slipping off the edge.

In the bedroom, you may also want something that extends beyond the feet of your bed. The idea is to step on a soft surface when you pop out of the bed in the morning. If you’re looking for hallway or corridor rugs, make sure the furniture has enough room on each side of a runner to sit on the hard flooring.

Color

When choosing the color of a rug, you should consider the room’s style and decor. Light colors make small spaces appear larger while soft shades blend well with warm wall colors. Ideally, the color should anchor to and match with all the other elements in the room. If you want to create a serene setting, choose colors from the same palate, so as not to jar the eyes with too much contrast. In cases where a bit of color shock is desired, you can combine a bright rug with warm wall colors to create an amazing focal point.

There are countless color variations in each rug style, so it’s easy to choose the one that matches the tone in your room. If the furniture is upholstered in a vivid pattern, select a solid-colored rug. You may want to avoid white colors in an area with too much foot traffic. Choose dark colors if you’re concerned about getting dirt on an area rug. For other rooms, especially socially oriented ones, select a color that is busier and fun.

Texture

A key element when considering the rug texture is foot traffic. If you want to place it in a heavily-used room, you should buy a cotton flat-weave or an all-wool rug. The rich fibers are crush-resistant and will serve you for many years. This is also the best option if you have a house full of kids and pets. Interestingly, this will also be easier to clean. An example of affordable wool is polypropylene. It’s blanket-soft and mimics the lustrous fibers of wool. If you’re not on a tight budget, you can buy a rug made of viscose material. It features a thin material and is easy to clean thanks to the glossy fibers and because of this romantic and lavish vibe, viscose is used in low-key spaces.

For other rooms with less traffic, you can use ultra-luxe, silk, or antique rugs. Alternatively, you can add a layer of sophistication in your living room with a hand-woven floor rug. For a crisp and natural look, a cotton rug is one of the best. It’s worth mentioning that the texture will determine the feel and lifespan of the rug.

Finding a rug that frames your living room perfectly is not an easy task. The most important valuables to consider include color, texture, and size. Before you make your investment decision, you should consider all points including glamour and comfort. Remember, choosing a rug that is too small for the available space will throw the room off balance.
